The osteology department maintains national collections of fossil bones from archaeological and geological excavations, collections of skeletons of recent vertebrates and a collection of Human deciduous teeth.

The fossil collections forms the basis for the research at the department, research which in particular concerns Norwegian late-and postglacial faunal history.

The cooperation between paleozoology, paleobotany, archaeology and quaternary geology within quaternary environmental research holds strong traditions in Bergen. We want to continue and to develop further this cooperation, both within research and education.

The collections of contemporary (recent) skeletons are comprehensive, for a number of species, the largest collection in Europe.

Our three collections comprice:

· A national fossil bone collection
· Recent crania and skeletons (searchable,

· A collection of human deciduous teeth (milk teeth)
