"Representations of local complexity in Melanesia:
Films from everyday life in Solomon Islands"

This small film festival will present various aspects of the complexity of Melanesian life as seen through anthropologist Edvard Hviding and film-maker/anthropologist Rolf Scott. Three documentary films will be screened, all produced by the anthropological film unit at the University of Bergen.

Chea’s Great Kuarao (57 minutes) portrays many aspects of contemporary village life in the Marovo Lagoon of New Georgia in the Western Solomon Islands, by focusing on a very particular, and regionally famous, communal reef fishery called kuarao. As the people of Chea village go through five days of preparing for, carrying out and distributing the catch of the kuarao, a multitude of village voices contribute to a complex picture of social life, gender, hierarchy, customary reef ownership and communal obligations, all within the contexts of chiefly leadership, church and school.

Vincent and the Rainforest: Global Conversations in Rural Melanesia (70 minutes)
The location of this film is also the Marovo Lagoon, but action unfolds in the remote bush-oriented village of Tamaneke, a stronghold of the Christian Fellowship Church, a remarkable indigenous movement of community building and rural development. The film conveys a rather typical Pacific Islands conversation, between two old friends and collaborators: Vincent Vaguni, a community leader and environmental activist, and anthropologist Edvard Hviding. Such extended conversation on global issues in an “out-of-the-way” place rarely achieves representation on film. As Vaguni and Hviding, joined by the former’s wife, explore local values under global pressure, environmental issues, logging of the rainforest, the actions of foreign NGOs, and more, the film builds up to its finale, an excursion into the deep rainforest of inner New Georgia.

Alfred Melotu, the Funeral of a Paramount Chief (45 minutes).
This film, produced in collaboration with anthropologists Jens Pinholt and Peter I. Crawford,  takes place in the Reef Islands of Santa Cruz, and reveals aspects of Chief Alfred Melotu’s life, death, and funeral. Simultaneously, the film is a presentation of big men, symbolic values, visions and land disputes.

With us at this mini-festival will be a number of distinguished guests, among them Mr. Lawrence Foana’ota (Director of the Solomon Islands National Museum), Mr. Ralph Regenvanu (Director of the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and National Museum), prominent Solomon Islands academic Dr. Tarcisius Tara Kabutaulaka (East-West Center, Honolulu) and leading Pacific specialists from the University of Hawai’i, the British Museum, New York University, Tulsa University (USA), and James Cook University (Australia). These guests will participate in discussion about the films, their contexts, and their representational significance.

METAL: A HEADBANGER’S JOURNEY

"The documentary is a journey tho the archeological site located in the Turrialba Valley. Contains interviews with several of the archeologists, arquitects and restaurateurs that have worked there. Compresses more than 30 years of research and attempts to give a reconstruction of the site, how did it funcion... with the help of 3D animation. It is an initiative to give the Costa Rican population a better understanding of their past and call attention towards the importance of that history to their future, culture and identity.

During the 1980s the National Monument was nominated to be declared as a Unesco´s World Heritage list. It was refused as Unesco found that there was not enough information to evaluate the real cultural value of the site. This documentary aims, then, to not only help to create a more respectful attitude towards a Costa Rican cultural heritage that has been quite yet understood. Both to the inside of the country as well as internationally, there is often the mistake of comparing it to Inca, Aztec or Mayan cultures; all of them known for the monumentality of its architecture. All too frequently this is used as an argument to put Costa Rican pre-Columbian history as the background of these great cultures. Guayabo is the evidence that Costa Rica had its own cultural development and, as such, deserves its own importance.

It is, unfortunately, Costa Rican idiosyncrasy and identity itself -with its hopes of being european rather than Latin-American- where the documentary finds part of the explanation for the abandonment that the archeological site suffers".

The documentary was awarded as Best Documentary, in the last Costa Rican Film Festival.

Bruce Kapferer:

"Walkabout is a classic Australian film by the English Director Nicolas Roeg and that raises crucial issues concerning White and Aboriginal interrelations. Beautifully filmed (technically it is a treat) the film was made soon after the Australian Labour Party came to power in 1967 and recognized Aborigines as full citizens. They were given the vote for the first time in 1969.

Rabbit Proof Fence is a film that is made over 20 years later, during conservative rule, but when Australian White consciousness has changed. That is White Australians or settler Australians are now conscious of their historical complicity in Aboriginal destructions and abjection.

Rabbit Proof Fence in many ways reverses the terms of Walkabout. It engages the same main Aboriginal actor, Gulpilil, whose role is effectively similar in the two films. He guides and protects the main protagonists who are children. But in the first film the children are white. In the second they are aboriginal and escaping white confinement.

Both are beautiful films cinematically and they raise crucial questions about Aborigines in Australian society, White Australian attitudes etc. Perhaps they raise general questions about minorities excluded or denied human rights in their own land?"

Rolf Scott:

Jernfremstilling i Etiopia, Afrika.
